The are some entertainment partnerships that were surely made in heaven and the duo Norman Shelley & Carleton Hobbs is no exception. Throughout the 50s and 60s they were THE Sherlock and Watson for BBC Radio having been brought together for the first time October 1952. Both were already established radio actors: Hobbs was a founding member of the BBC drama repertory company in 1939; the same year that Shelley created his famous Children's Hour role as Winnie-The-Pooh. But it's as the residents of 221B Baker Street that two will be immortalized; whom they portrayed for 17 years.

SYNOPSIS

Holmes didn't always neatly solve mysteries. In The Five Orange Pips he is bested by the Ku Klux Klan and loses a client, which is a tad careless. Watson admits on this occasion that the case has "been but partially cleared up", perhaps damning his friend with faint praise and understatement.

John Openshaw tells a fantastic story about his family's dealings with the KKK, and while Holmes appreciates the imminent danger that threatens his client, he stays at home and hesitates. By the morning Openshaw is dead and the trail has gone cold. The mystery is solved but the client is lost. Was Holmes unlucky or incompetent? An exercise for the student perhaps
